Healthy eating
Why is healthy eating important?
Although, a good oral health routine will prevent most dental problems, you can also reduce the risks for your mouth by reducing the amount of sticky or acidic food and drink that you consume.
What food is healthy?
It can be difficult to determine whether a product will harm your teeth, as some labels hide what is in the product. For example, a label might say ‘carbohydrate’ instead of ‘sugar’. Also, some products state ‘no added sugar’, but may contain a lot of natural fruit sugar. Furthermore, there are other ingredients in products, such as acids, which can also be harmful to your teeth.
Although, it is difficult to evaluate how erosive some products are, there are natural foods that are very healthy for your teeth and not erosive. These include fruit, vegetables, dairy products and starchy products (such as bread, rice and pasta). Water and milk are also healthy, as well as tea and coffee, providing that you do not add sugar to them.
To help to prevent erosion you should also try to restrict the amount of sugary or acidic food and drink that you consume. Chewing sugar-free gum during the day, is another recommended way of preventing erosion, as it increases the amount of saliva that is produced in the mouth. This will help to remove bits of food and plaque.
It is important to remember that healthy eating cannot only help to prevent dental problems but also help you to maintain a healthy body as well.
