Under Armour Mouth Guards
12/12/2013 by Dental DesignA mouth guard is a specially made cover which fits exactly over your teeth and gums, in order to cushion and protect your teeth from damage when playing sports that involve physical contact or moving objects. Example sports include: cricket, hockey, football, boxing, American football and rugby. Wearing a mouth guard could prevent knocked out teeth, broken and dislocated jaws.
A further added benefit of wearing an under armour mouth guard is that when you train and compete, your natural reaction is to clench your jaw. Its part of the “fight or flight” wiring of your brain. Your clenched jaw and teeth compress your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), triggering your brain to release an excess amount of performance-sapping hormones (such as cortisol) that produces stress, tiredness and distraction.
UA performance mouthwear helps the human body help itself. ArmourBite Technology prevents your teeth from clenching and pivots your jaw forward to relieve pressure on the TMJ. Gone are the excess negative hormones and the energy-draining effects, so the body can now unleash its full potential.
At Dentistry@68 we provide both custom made and self-fit under armour mouth guards.
Self-fit mouth guards are pre-made and can be moulded to fit the individual’s teeth
Custom made mouth guards fit your mouth perfectly, to protect your mouth and gums properly. Ill fitting mouth guards can cause more issues than they prevent, so for custom made guards, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth and will send them off to the laboratory to be made for you.
How do I care for my mouth guard?
- Rinse your mouth guard with cold water or with mouthwash before and after each use and regularly clean it with toothpaste and a toothbrush.
- Keep the mouth guard in a firm, perforated container when not in use. This permits air circulation and helps to prevent damage.
- Protect the mouth guard from high temperatures. For example: hot water, hot surfaces and direct sunlight. This is to minimise the risk of distorting its shape.
- Occasionally check the mouth guard for general wear. If you find any holes or tears or if it becomes loose or causes any discomfort, see the dentist for a replacement.
Depending on your age, mouth guards may need to be replaced fairly regularly, particularly if you are still growing, as new teeth may come through and move position requiring your current mouth guard to not fit your mouth properly. Adults do not need their mouth guard to be replaced quite as often, however, as with all sports equipment, they will be subject to wear and tear. It is recommended that whenever you have your check up that you bring your mouth guard along too, so that it can be checked for signs of damage.
Mouth guards come in all sorts of different colours to make them more fun to wear- so you could even have a guard to match your sports strip!
