Under new regulations, the law states that only those on the dental register can carry out tooth whitening and only dental practitioners may use a concentration of up to 6% hydrogen peroxide (18% carbamide peroxide). It also prohibits all people under 18 from having their teeth whitened.
This means that all tooth whitening carried out by beauty clinics and salons on the high street is now illegal, including over the counter kits containing over 0.1% hydrogen peroxide sold directly to the public. Anyone who is found to perform tooth whitening without being registered with the GDC as a qualified dental professional is now liable for prosecution.
Your smile is important. It’s one of the first things you notice when you meet someone. A whiter, brighter smile is beautiful – it can help you feel better about yourself and make a memorable impression.
Your lifestyle and the ageing process can stain and darken your teeth. Many things we do on a regular basis can contribute to stained teeth, such as drinking coffee, tea, cola and red wine or smoking.
Whitening can get your smile looking its best. You should look for a whitening procedure that is:
- Long lasting
- Convenient
- Low sensitivity
- Proven to be safe and effective
- Performed by a Dental Professional
What will happen when I visit my dentist to get my teeth whitened?
- Following a dental examination, your dentist will decide which treatment is best for you, the duration and the expected results
- Your dentist will prepare a customised tray especially tailored to fit your teeth, and will supervise your treatment whether you complete it at home or in the clinic
- With the ‘At Home System’, you can wear the gel in the tray at home during the night, or with certain systems, for up to an hour each day.
