Fresh Breath
22/01/2014 by Dental DesignDid you know that £285 million is spent each year on battling bad breath? 85% of the British population has had the problem at some point in their lives.
It could just be a case of morning breath, a lingering reminisce of the garlic bread you had for dinner or it could be something more serious, such as gum disease or an infection.
Unfortunately, bad breath is still seen as a bit of a taboo and usually it’s the person with bad breath that is the last to know. If you suspect that you do have mouth odour, ask a close friend or family member for an honest opinion, or failing that, self-test by licking your wrist; starting at the back of the tongue and wiping the inner wrist to the tip of the tongue. Leave the saliva on there for 10 seconds and smell for unpleasant odours.
Here are some helpful tips for keeping your breath fresh:
1) Brush, Floss & Rinse
2) Clean your tongue
3) Stay Hydrated
4) Don’t rely on mints- they mask the smell
5) Food- avoid a high protein & low carb diet- it’s a haven for bacteria!
6) Rinse your mouth with water regularly
7) Be Natural- drink green tea and eat parsley & dill
8) Eat crunchy fruit and vegetables to stimulate saliva
9) Stop Smoking
10) Visit the dentist & hygienist regularly
It may not just be a problem with the mouth, there could be something wrong with the nose or sinuses or even the stomach which is causing the odour. In the first instance, visit your dentist who should be able to advise you on the best treatment for your bad breath.
