Brush, floss, rinse, repeat
01/06/2016 by Dental DesignJust like your friendly dentist, your hygienist is another mouth related pro you should be regularly hooking up with if you want to maintain awesome oral health.
Our hygienists are top tooth cleaners – they get into all those nooks and crannies that can harbour harmful bacteria, remove stubborn tartar and finish off with a prettifying polish so your teeth feel super silky. As well as this smart ‘scale and polish’, they keep a watchful eye on the health of your gums, checking for signs of inflammation and bleeding that could indicate gingivitis or periodontal disease. And, if gum disease is present, they can offer periodontal therapy to prevent it getting any worse. A highly vigilant bunch, they can also check for mouth cancer, an increasingly prevalent condition that is so much easier to treat if caught early.
On top of all this hands-on checking and treating, our hygienists will share their extensive knowledge and offer lots of tooth cleaning tips, as well as demonstrating dental tools. They will also advise you about what to eat and what to avoid scoffing to maintain happy, healthy teeth. Additionally, they will suggest smoking cessation tips because puffing on cigarettes can cause some serious staining and make you more susceptible to gum disease, not to mention playing havoc with the rest of your body too.
Above all, hygienists are trained to prevent gum disease and tooth decay, and do everything they can to help you preserve a bright, complete smile, so it really does make sense to see them regularly (usually every 6 months). Also, as poor gum health has been linked to a number of serious conditions such as heart disease and strokes, hygiene appointments can be beneficial for your general well-being too.
As well as taking advantage of our hygienists’ skills and experience when you see them in the practice, it’s also important to follow their advice and keep up the good work at home. And that goes for influencing little ones too – after all, your kids need to keep their petite pearly whites in top condition and tooth care techniques learnt at an early age are more likely to stick!
You can make a big difference to your oral health by working with your dentist and hygienist. Dental professionals are there to care for your teeth and gums but you have to play your part too, and that means following a home care routine that incorporates all their useful advice, including getting to grips with handy dental aids.
And remember, you can come and see one of our hygienists even if you aren’t registered with us. So pop by and treat your teeth to a deep clean while you pick up heaps of dental health improving tips too!
