Gums, gums, glorious gums!
09/03/2016 by Dental DesignAs well as deep cleaning your teeth with a smile friendly ‘scale and polish’ our experienced hygienists will also check the health of your gums and teach you how to keep your teeth beautifully plaque free. Keeping up an effective dental care routine is important for the lifelong maintenance of strong teeth, so you will need to play your part – but don’t worry we’ll let you know exactly how to do this and what tools to use!
The hygienists’ main role is to prevent gum disease – that tooth bothering condition that can cause all kind of problems for your teeth including potentially making them fall out! They help to avoid this troubling disease by getting rid of tartar and plaque and teaching you how to keep up all that good work at home.
Why is gum disease so bad?
Mainly because it is the chief cause of tooth loss and, though it’s a pretty common condition, people are often completely unaware they have it.
Gum disease is caused by plaque – the bacteria filled film that loves to linger on our teeth. If we don’t get rid of this sticky substance, it can lead to gum irritation causing redness and soreness (gingivitis). If this is left untreated, periodontitis can develop, which is very bad news as it can destroy gums, soft tissue and even the bone that holds your precious teeth in place.
There are a number of reasons why you may be at greater risk of gum disease including:
- Smoking (yet another reason to ditch the fags!)
- Age (just one more downside to getting older)
- Diabetes
- Being stressed (leading to a weakened immune system and possible neglect of good habits)
- Wearing partial dentures (so keep these nice and clean!)
Also there is no cure for gum disease, but there are ways to manage it and avoid waving goodbye to your prized pearly whites.
Clean on….
The main way to prevent gum disease or stop it getting any worse is to ensure teeth are kept as clean as possible. This means having a top notch home care routine (with oodles of brushing and flossing) and making regular visits to our helpful hygienists. Keep an eye on your sugar intake too!
And don’t forget the little ones – children can really benefit from being taught tons of tooth cleaning tips, and get used to visiting the dental surgery at the same time. Our hygienists can also keep tiny teeth safe with fissure sealants and varnishes.
Also patients who aren’t registered with Dentistry@68 can visit the hygienist for an oral health enhancing deep clean without seeing the dentist first – with no obligation to join our practice.
