The dangers of Illegal tooth whitening
11/08/2015 by Dental DesignIn the 21st century a beautiful white smile is more important than ever before. Thanks to the rise of social media and the popularity of the ‘selfie’ it’s not just the rich and famous showing off a healthy looking, bright smile at every opportunity.
Many people now enjoy regular tooth whitening- allowing them to feel confident and happy and benefiting them greatly in a personal or professional capacity.
Today, tooth whitening is widely available- and much more affordable than ever before.
But where should you get your teeth whitened?
Well, there are many cheap kits available to buy online. Other people choose to visit beauty salons, hairdressing salons and other places where whitening can be done for them more cheaply and quickly. But be very aware, these products are illegal, unlicensed and highly dangerous. They should be avoided at all costs.
Only ever have your teeth whitened by a qualified dentist.
Yes, tooth whitening can be more expensive when carried out in a dental surgery- but there are a number of reasons for this. The chemicals used in whitening can be very dangerous in the wrong hands. At the end of the day it’s impossible to know what is contained in an illegal tooth whitening kit. Chemical quantities could be far too low (having no effect at all) or far too high (potentially causing serious harm your teeth and gums in the long-term).
When carried out under the supervision of your dentist, your teeth will be fully assessed before any whitening procedure- to make sure they are all healthy and able to be whitened. Your Dentist will advise you fully on any side effects and any teeth which may be unaffected by treatment. They can also explain how to use the whitening treatment properly and safely. If you are using the more powerful products they can protect your gums in surgery before treatment commences.
They are also here for advice if you experience any problems at any point.
So think carefully before having any illegal tooth whitening done- after all, in your pursuit of a beautiful smile it would be a shame to loose you teeth completely in the process!
New regulations state that only qualified, insured and licensed dental professionals should carry out tooth whitening. It is also illegal for anyone under 18 to have their teeth whitened.
At Dentistry @68 we can offer chair-side whitening in surgery- allowing us to dramatically improve the look of your teeth in around one hour. If you’d prefer we can also provide you with convenient and comfortable home whitening kits.
