Tooth coloured fillings
10/08/2012 by Dental DesignWhat is a composite filling?
Composite fillings are made from a mixture of dimethacrylates and filler particles including tooth-coloured plastic, glass, ceramic, quartz powder and silicate which helps to restore decayed teeth.
What are the advantages of composite fillings?
The main advantage of choosing a composite filling is aesthetics. This is because the composite is the same colour as the tooth making it seem almost invisible, rather than an unsightly silver. Composites are also mercury free which some regard to be better for you.
Furthermore, composites bond to the tooth supporting tooth structure and creating a barrier against bacteria, preventing further breakage and insulating the tooth from temperature changes creating pain from sensitivity.
Sometimes with composite fillings less tooth structure needs to be removed than with amalgams when preparing for fillings.
What are the disadvantages of composite fillings?
The shade of composite fillings can change slightly if the patient drinks or eats staining foods such as tea, coffee and red wine.
Composites may have a tendency to wear out sooner compared to some silver amalgam fillings. Composites tend to last approximately 5 years in comparison to 10-15 years for amalgams.
Dentistry@68 offer both forms of fillings and will advise patients based upon their individual needs, if you would like further information please do not hesitate to contact the practice.
