What is involved in a dental check-up?
19/06/2013 by Dental DesignVisiting the dentist for a routine check-up is very important to ensure that your mouth stays healthy and if any problems do arise, they are treated early; leaving dental problems untreated for a long time could make them far more difficult to treat.
Initially, the dentist will ask about your general health and if you have encountered any problems with your mouth, gums or teeth since your last visit and whether you are taking any medication. The dentist should then examine your teeth, gums and mouth. They will check for the onset of gum disease, bone density (using an x-ray) and will conduct an oral cancer screening. The dentist may also check your jaw to ensure that you are biting correctly.
If required, the dentist will advise on your diet, smoking, alcohol use and teeth cleaning habits if they are negatively affecting your oral health.
If the dentist considers that further treatment is needed, they will explain the treatment to you and provide you with a treatment plan.
After your check up, the dentist will recommend a date for your next visit. Many patients assume that they need a routine dental check-up every six months, however everyone is different and the dentist will recommend how frequently you visit based upon how good your oral health currently is and your risk of future problems; anything from every three months to every two years is appropriate. For those under 18, check-ups should be annual.
