What is excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis?

Excessive sweating, medically known as hyperhidrosis, is a condition characterised by extreme and uncontrollable sweating, beyond which is necessary to regulate body temperature. It affects millions of people worldwide, often causing physical discomfort and emotional distress.

Hyperhidrosis can occur in specific areas of the body, including the palms, soles of the feet, underarms and face. It can also be more generalised, affecting your entire body. At Aesthetics@68, we can help you manage excessive sweating with effective treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between normal sweating and hyperhidrosis?

Normal sweating is a way to control body temperature in hot weather, during a fever or when exercising. Excessive sweating means that you sweat much more than considered normal, even when you are not hot, anxious or exercising.

How long does Botox® for excessive sweating last?

The effects of the treatment typically last for several months. You can repeat the treatment to maintain your results, and repeat treatments often give longer lasting results over time.

What causes sweaty hands and how can they be treated?

Sweaty hands are caused by a condition called palmar hyperhidrosis, which is when the nerves that control the sweat glands become overactive. While there isn’t a cure, effective treatments are available, including targeted Botulinum toxin injections.

Are the results of over sweating treatment permanent?

The results of over sweating treatment are not permanent, and will typically last between 4-12 months, depending on your individual case. You can repeat the treatment as and when you need it. After successive treatments the results usually last longer.

Where does the sweat go?

The rest of the body compensates and ensures an even distribution so no other areas become affected.

Why does excessive armpit sweating happen to me?

There is no known cause or reason why some people sweat excessively. Very rarely, it can be due to a medical condition such as an over-active thyroid.

How does Botox® work?

Botox® stops the nerve endings sending messages to the sweat glands and temporarily reduces the sweating. It is also commonly used to treat wrinkles by relaxing certain muscles of the face.
