If your tooth has become unsightly, damaged or decayed, a crown can provide an effective and aesthetic cover, protecting the tooth from further trauma. We use porcelain crowns, designed to blend seamlessly into your smile and able to be colour matched with your existing teeth for a perfect finish.
Book a consultationA crown is a safe, secure and stable way to restore your tooth. It is fixed into place on top of your damaged tooth, returning strength and functionality to perfectly simulate the appearance of natural teeth. Crowns can be used for several reasons, including:
Firstly, we make sure you are suitable for a crown during a thorough clinical examination. We assess your teeth, take X-rays and carry out any preparatory work you may need. We give advice on material choices, discuss treatment timelines and give you the opportunity to ask any questions or address your concerns.
At your second appointment, we prepare the teeth that will be crowned. Using local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort, we reduce your tooth size in order to create space to successfully accommodate the crown. We take an impression of your prepared tooth so your crown can be created by skilled dental technicians. We fit a temporary crown to protect your tooth until your final restoration is ready.
When your crown is ready, we invite you for your fitting appointment. We remove your temporary crown and carefully clean your tooth. We try your final crown on your tooth, checking for a perfect fit, appearance and harmony with your bite. When we are both happy, we fit your crown securely in place using dental cement.
Book a consultationWith proper care and attention, you can expect your crown to last up to fifteen years before needing to be replaced. It is important to look after your crown, as porcelain does have the tendency to chip or fracture and could need to be repaired or replaced earlier. It is best to avoid biting or chewing very hard substances, or using your teeth to open anything.
We recommend you treat your crown just like one of your natural teeth, and include it in your daily brushing and flossing routine. Whilst your crown itself cannot decay or deteriorate over time, the underlying tooth still can, so it is important to look after it. Pay close attention to the point where your crown meets the gum, as this can be vulnerable. It is also important to visit your dentist for regular check ups so we can keep an eye on your crown and spot any potential problems early.
Porcelain crowns are very durable, and largely resistant to stains. However, they can become stained over time, particularly if you consume a lot of tea, coffee and other dark foods and drinks. The level of staining is usually less significant than in your natural teeth, and can usually be avoided with excellent oral hygiene and care.
Whitening treatments are not effective on porcelain crowns. If you are considering having your teeth whitened, you may be advised to do this before your crown treatment, so it can be made to match. Your crown can also be replaced to ensure it blends in beautifully, at an additional cost.
