Dental anxiety is a common phobia which can cause some people to avoid attending regular check up appointments or accessing the vital treatment they may need. A reluctance to see the dentist can be due to a variety of reasons, including concerns about pain, previous bad experiences, and a fear of being judged or feeling out of control.

In addition to this, she worked for five years as a Maxillofacial Specialty Doctor at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital providing a broad range of oral surgery procedures. Your general health will be carefully assessed, including your blood pressure and oxygen levels.
A very thin needle is inserted into a vein in the back of your hand leaving a soft plastic tube through which the sedative will be gradually delivered. You will be closely monitored throughout the treatment process.
Additional medication will be required to relieve any discomfort as sedation only calms you and does not provide pain relief. However, this will be administered once you are suitably relaxed.
The effects of sedation will take a while to wear off, so you will need someone to take you home and keep an eye on you.
Yes, when administered and supervised by a trained and qualified professional, sedation is completely safe. We discuss the procedure with you before beginning, and make sure you understand the treatment and effects.
If you are feeling worried about visiting the dentist, please let us know. We are very experienced in treating nervous patients and helping them feel more relaxed in our care. Our practice is a calm and welcoming space, designed to make you feel at ease. We will discuss as much or as little of your treatment with you as you are comfortable with and will stop during treatment to give you a quick break if you need it.
If you feel you would benefit from sedation during your dental treatment, please let us know. We will be able to tell you a little more about the sedation process and make sure it is right for you.
