Find out moreWhile dermal fillers are not typically used for TMJ or teeth grinding, anti-wrinkle injections, also known as jaw Botox® can be highly effective. They are injected into the masseter muscles (the large muscles that move the jaw), relaxing them and reducing the intensity of clenching and grinding. This alleviates muscle tension and pain, and helps prevent further tooth damage.
No, anti-wrinkle injections for TMJ or bruxism are not a permanent solution. The effects typically last for 3 to 6 months, after which repeat treatments are necessary to maintain the benefits. It’s a temporary but effective way to manage symptoms and provide relief.
The treatment involves a series of small injections into the masseter muscles of the jaw. It’s a quick procedure, usually taking about 10-15 minutes. The treatment is virtually pain-free, using fine needles. You may experience some mild discomfort, often described as a slight pinch, but this is over very quickly. Local anaesthetic can be used if needed.
Good candidates for anti-wrinkle treatment for TMJ or bruxism are people experiencing symptoms including chronic jaw pain, headaches and excessive tooth wear. It is also a good option for those who haven’t found sufficient relief from alternative treatments such as splints or night guards. TMJ injections are a quick and effective solution.
For TMJ and bruxism, the primary area treated with anti-wrinkle injections is the masseter muscle in the jaw. Sometimes, injections may also be administered to the temporalis muscles (on the sides of the head) if they are contributing to the pain. Results typically begin to appear within a few days to a week, with full effects visible after about two weeks. The effects usually last between 3 to 6 months.
Side effects from treatments for jaw clenching and TMJ are typically mild and temporary. They can include short-lived soreness, bruising or swelling at the injection sites. We discuss the potential side effects with you before your treatment begins. Serious side effects are rare when treatment is carried out by an experienced and qualified practitioner.
