New Year, new Smile – Let’s make your smile shine in 2020!
04/02/2020 by Dental DesignCosmetic dentistry is now big business, with the current UK market being worth a whopping £2.2 billion, a figure according to Dentaly.org estimated to grow by 8% by 2021. However, cosmetic dentistry is not necessarily a ‘new concept’. There is evidence to suggest that cosmetic dentistry procedures have been around for 1000s of years.
Archaeologists discovered ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics depicting dental procedures, which suggests some dental work and extractions were carried out. However, evidence from excavated mummies also reveals that many people likely died from tooth and gum disease.
As far back as ancient Roman times, it is thought ivory and bone started to be used to replace missing teeth. The Etruscan people are said to have begun the dental practice of making dental bridges out of ox bone and gold wire in around 700BC.
Luckily for everyone in 2020, we have the technology and the skill to no longer die from gum disease or suffer ill-fitting teeth made from bone. In fact, nowadays, we can even create the exact smile we have always wanted!
Smile Design
Here at Dentistry@68 we offer the Smile Design process, whereby you can achieve your perfect smile. Major factors such as a person’s face shape, their tooth colour, tooth size and shape will all be looked at in order for the dentist and team to create the smile the patient has always wanted but also one that will really suit them. It’s not solely about the aesthetics, it is also important to consider how the jaw moves and functions, for your new smile to be in harmony with your bite, which ensures longevity of your perfect smile.
Common treatments available in Smile Design.
The Smile Design process offers many different treatments, which can lead to a better smile. These include teeth whitening, veneers, crowns & bridges, porcelain restorations, white fillings, teeth straightening, dental implants and even gum reshaping. Singular treatments or a combination of the above may be chosen to meet the expectations of the patient.
Patients often comment to us how getting a new smile has had a positive effect on their self-confidence, self-esteem and relationships.
The stages of Smile Design
- Your facial and lip structure is assessed as well as your facial symmetry
- Your teeth, gums and soft tissues will be examined
- The jaw and facial muscles will be examined
- Digital x-rays will be taken, if necessary
- Digital photographs of you and your teeth will be created
- Moulds and impressions of your teeth will be taken and used to assess the function of your bite
- In-House discussions take place with specialist dentists
- Technicians create a wax-up using all the information and photos gathered and the patients’ wishes
- The wax-up can usually be used to provide a putty guide, to transfer the proposed new smile into the patient’s mouth, for the smile to be trialled by the patient.
- If the patient is happy with the new smile, the treatment to create their new smile can start.
- Full treatment plans are always provided
- You have a beautiful smile to be proud of
Be safe
It is important when undertaking any dental procedures to see a professional, who knows what they are doing and has completed the procedures before. It is so important to be safe when it comes to dental procedures, because cutting corners can cause long-term damage to your teeth or gums. In modern times, you certainly don’t need to suffer the pain or problems faced by those people in ancient times.
Do your research and find out what specialities the dentists have in the practice, look at testimonials on their website. You can see our testimonials here. We are proud of the work we complete and the customer service we provide for our patients.
